The RV Trip of a Lifetime

Thanks to a project called "Vets Roll" 128 veterans of WW II will take to the road in a "convoy" of eight donated RV's and two charter buses. They are destined for our nation's capital, Washington, D.C., to view the new WW II Memorial.

Our good friends at Finnegans' RV Center in Beloit, WI are sponsoring this RV road trip in honor of their father and other vets who were among our "Greatest Generation."

It's not costing the vets a single dime and since they will all be traveling together they will have plenty of time to exchange stories about where they served, the men they knew, the friends they lost and a war they won.

As a former Marine combat veteran and RV enthusiast myself I can appreciate what the guys at Finnegans' are doing for our vets. And to show my appreciation I plan on chipping in to help offset the $100 grand that it's estimated to cost for them to sponsor the trip. Well, a lot of them, fortunately for buyers of Jayco, America's Most Liveable RV's, are working in the Jayco manufacturing facility in Middlebury, IN.

Since the day I first saw a gently pre-owned 2005 Greyhawk Class C Motorhome by Jayco I have been in love with this RV. It has everything an RVer could want in an RV and it's hand crafted by the Amish. I can't wait till the day I can actually own one.

I myself have a gently used 5th wheel, a KZ Durango 2005 with all the goodies and I would gladly trade it in for an 05 or 06 Greyhawk. I might even throw in some cash too!

The Amish work ethic is well known and if you desire quality work in the construction of an RV (don't we all?) both inside and out, well, watch this video and decide if a Jayco built, Amish crafted RV is for you.

Do they remember it fondly like they would their first car, or was it something they couldn't wait to upgrade?

Most of the motorhome owners I have spoken with had an RV of some sort, small fifth-wheel, or travel trailer before they decided to upgrade to a larger, self contained rig like a Class C motorhome but RV dealers have a different opinion. They say that most of the people who buy the bigger more fancy motorhomes are first-timers and I find that hard to believe. Have you ever driven one of those monsters?

So that is the question for our readers today, did you start with a motorhome first or did you work your way up by starting first with a pop up camper, travel trailer or 5th wheel?

Think of it as an investment in your sanity and before you take that cruise or overseas trip, consider an RV vacation.

An RV experience can be had over a weekend without the security issues of air travel. You don't have to go hundreds of miles from home. Check out some areas within a hundred miles or so of where you live and get the family together in an RV. You don't even have to buy one.

Rent a motorhome, pop-up or travel trailer and see what you have been missing, almost literally right in your back yard. And even if you do decide to go further, the gas money you spend will be recovered by not having to stay in an expensive hotel. RV'ing gets you next to nature, it relaxes you like no other mode of travel and is loads of fun. If you are a baby boomer who planned on buying an RV when you retired and feel you have to continue to work – get a smaller RV or rent one in the meantime. It's the most fun you can have on wheels.

The purchase countdown clock is set for May 2009, not that far away in boomer time. The question still remains; what will it be? However, we have a sneaky feeling, as with all things that we are passionate about, that the journey might be as much fun as the destination and hopefully, dear reader, you will find us qualified to not only share the adventure of our quest but to present it in a way that is truthful, straight-forward and entertaining. With our faithful companion Duke, the "Wonder" dog, we will embark! (ha) on a road to discovery that will more than likely change our lives forever. No more commutes, no more office politics, no more "suits" and no more fear of hearing the "F" (fired!) word.

When I close my eyes I see us  somewhere like the Oregon Coast, comfortably ensconced in our 5th wheel trailer, listening to the strains of the Beach Boys while my wife fixes us a cocktail, just in time to enjoy a spectacular ocean sunset. Until that incredible moment arrives where dreams meet reality please enjoy the journey of discovery with us.

Meanwhile, during our search for the perfect RV we will be gathering items of interest that we run across that we think will be useful info for the prospective RV buyer and even the experienced RV'er. It is my sincere hope to be able to devote full time to this endeavor in the next year or so and if that happens you can expect more frequent postings with a lot more information.  It has truly become a labor of love for me and I give thanks every day to the patience of my dear wife who still suffers the daily grind in corporate America. Keep track of the features you don't necessarily need or want and that will help narrow your search.

Our perfect RV will be in the size range that we think will be manageable (how we arrived at that is another post) and will give us the four elements in a traveling home that we feel are things we can't compromise on. Our RV will be lived in for a quarter of the year in places like Oregon, Colorado, Alaska and we want to feel at home, not cramped. Your perfect RV may be anything from a Pop-up to a fancy motorhome depending on how you want to use it and how much time you plan to spend in it.

Jayco Fifth WheelWe Sure Like The Fifth-Wheels We've Seen

Can't afford the big guys and not sure I would have one if I could. And after having visited more RV lots than we can remember and talked to many "experts" at dealerships, RV shows and with private owners we find (at least at this point) that we are about 80% decided on a 5th wheel or "fiver", as they are sometimes affectionately called, something in the 27' to 30' range. This should make towing and maneuvering easier (especially for rookies like us) yet seems to be big enough to offer the most options in floor plans for rigs of that size. It also keeps the towing vehicle to three- quarter ton size with room to grow.

Look, then look some more -  Over the last year and a half (mostly weekends) we have toured the insides of at least a thousand RV's, sat in hundreds of slide-out dinettes, pretended to prepare meals (checking counter space) in just as many kitchens and squinted our eyes while trying to imagine the view (out those gorgeously expansive windows) as being that of the ocean or forest. Takes a vivid imagination, I know, but those days will come. Who was it that said, "if you picture yourself there, it will happen?"
