Back then I was a 16 year- old junior in high school April 9th, 1966 thinking of the girls who worshiped me as a lifeguard for the summer, looking forward to being a hotshot senior at 18 and eventually joining the service. Barry Sadler almost had me convinced that I had to be a Green Beret. Fortunately I came to my senses and joined the United States Marine Corps after graduating.

Now I find a peaceful spot in the forest and when the time is right I listen to the oldies, close my eyes and remember how it was in 1966, an important year in boomer history.

High school sock hops, American Bandstand, Beatles coming, what a great time to be a teen. 1963 represented the last year of sanity, a cultural explosion was just around the corner. As Don Henley would later proclaim, this was the end of the innocence.

This week the BoomerRVer takes you back to 1961. If memory serves that would put these guys into a zone somewhere between the beatniks of the 50's and the invasion of the hippies. The guys and gals groovin to these sounds were seniors when I was a sophomore but age-wise, right in the middle of Boomerdom, for sure.
