Baby Boomer Era Over?
That's what I have been hearing ever since Barack Obama was sworn in as our 44th president. People, mostly historians and social analysts, are predicting a generational change, a passing of the torch, etc, almost from the day Mr. Obama assumes the throne. That puts a lot of pressure on a guy who up to a year ago was the junior senator from Illinois. I just hope he is up to the task.
Baby Boomers Are RVing – Not Dead!
I don't buy it myself. The first baby boomers are just now coming of retirement age and still have a lot to contribute before Gen X takes over. While I welcome change and a fresh face in the oval office I am not sensing a generational change, a time when a whole generation is just dismissed as irrelevent – like, us boomers caused this whole mess!
I personally don't see the signs that a cultural era dominated by baby boomers has come and gone just because the media says so. I will admit that Barack Obama is a cultural phenomenon, a man that won the highest office in the land waging a campaign across the Web, Twittering MySpace with his Blackberry.
President Obama is viewed by many as more of a generational "bridge" and is looked upon as a shining example of a new pragmatism, a politician for the people, idealistic but realistic, eager to demonstrate new ways of problem solving by crossing party lines in his quest to fill key cabinet jobs with those that are up for the challenge regardless of party affiliation. But as Mr. Obama assumes the mantle of Commander In Chief the country is in one of it's worst down cycles, maybe the worst cycle ever, certainly in the life of this 60 year-old. Unfortunately greed is a part of every generation and it doesn't just go away when the new guy takes over. We need to figure out both Iraq and Afghanistan, tighten our borders and leave the middle easterns to their terrorist ways. (more…)
